The Wurreker Awards, presented by VAEAI (Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc) and the Victoria Government, recognise excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment, training, and development across private and public sectors.
The highly prestigious Dr Mary Atkinson award that is awarded to Koorie Organisations was won by Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service. They are the lead specialist Aboriginal-specific family violence service provider in the eastern metropolitan region of Melbourne. In partnership with Swinburne University, Boorndawan has designed and commenced the delivery of a Graduate Certificate in Client Assessment and Case Management for Aboriginal Family Violence Practitioners.
The Graduate Certificate in Client Assessment and Case Management for practitioners, has been developed by Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service (BWAHS) who are an Aboriginal community-controlled family violence organisation. BWAHS supports victim survivors, users of violence, their families, and kin. This course will be delivered in partnership with Swinburne University.
This nationally recognised graduate certificate has been developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practitioners in family violence case management roles.
The course draws on evidence-based best practice to support and further develop practitioners. Students will learn from one another through course facilitators creating an open interactive learning experience.
This course has been developed with the assistance of the Dhelk Dja Working Group and addresses the shared aim of keeping community safer from risks of family violence by developing their skills in but not limited to reflective practice, trauma and culturally informed assessment, case management and healing programs.

To provide insight into police understanding of their role in family violence and its prevention
Develop knowledge of:
Police procedures and requirements in dealing with incidents of family violence, victim survivors and users of family violence
The range and kinds of interventions and orders applied by courts and police to users of family violence
What is and what causes transgenerational family violence?
Cumulative and multiple forms of trauma and transgenerational family violence
The drivers of transgenerational family violence
Working in trauma informed way with transgenerational trauma and looking after ourselves as community workers
Build on our knowledge of mental health issues in community
Learn more about the relationship between mental health and family violence
Understand more about trauma informed care
Develop skills in working with people affected by mental health issues who may be experiencing family violence
Build on your understanding of elder abuse in the community
Learn how to recognise elder abuse when it occurs
Build on our skills in intervening to keep older community members safe from abuse
We will develop our safety planning skills that tap into the knowledge and supports of the victim survivor
We will build tools to develop rapport to engage with clients so that they disclose their experiences of family violence during assessment
We will develop our understanding of:

We will develop our skills in identifying when people who access your service present a risk of family violence
We will learn to assess victim survivors for family violence risk in ways that are culturally appropriate and safe
